The Forest of Dean, is said to be home to a Beast that hides away in the beautiful ancient woodland in the South West of the UK. There have been many sightings over the years by locals and visitors alike to the Creature they call the Beast of Dean. Many of them have described a Boar or Horse-like Creature while others theorise that it is a Big Cat or a Wolf released illegally by a disreputable owner. Then there are others who believe the Beast of Dean is a supernatural entity tied to the land, a mystical being summoned from the depths of time. In these cases the Creature spotted is described as Wolf like and very different to a domestic Dog or any natural wildlife in the area.
Mike Wright witnessed a huge grey Wolf as he was driving close to the Cannop ponds area of Gloustershire. Mike shared with me what took place on that dark lonely road in the Forest on Saturday 8th November 2025 around 10pm.
Mike Wright: "Last night I was driving on Forest road, there were no other cars on the road and it was dark but I don't doubt what I saw. It was an ordinary and pretty uneventful journey until I saw a creature that was standing on four legs next to the side of the road, that I can only describe as being a huge grey Wolf. As I drove past it, it didn't attempt to approach me, it just stared at me before crossing the road behind me going towards Cannop Ponds. I turned around as soon as I could and I went back to the area where Id seen it but there was no sign of it
I'd estimate its size down on all four legs was around 3-3.5 feet tall. It wasn't a domestic Dog as it was clearly a Wolf. I have spent my life in the forest and I am used to the normal wildlife like Deer, Ponies and Foxes and it didn't fit their description".
Mike is not the only person in the area that has seen what they described as being 'clearly a Wolf'. On the 20th March 2022 Gloucester Live reported that Chris Howard shared his shock after a chilling encounter with a Wolf. Chris is convinced that it was a Wolf he saw and the incident left him frozen in fear.
Chris was walking his Dogs along a path he always takes and was stopped in his tracks when he heard a stick snap in the darkness. He shone his torch towards where the sound came from and saw the Wolf standing there just 15 metres away. Chris said "I was walking up the path which is near a residential area about 100 yards away. I was keeping an ear and an eye out for Wild Boar when I heard a large 'snap'. I shone my torch and I saw a wolf with its nose down to the ground and then it looked at me.”
What I saw was one million per cent a Wolf. It had a long snout, a big head and was well built from its neck to its rear end. It was not malnourished, put it that way, it looked very healthy. Its hair around its neck was long and the eyes were white. After it looked at me, it put his nose to the floor and walked off. When it had turned I saw its tail which was shorter than I had expected but curled and bushy. I love Huskies and I know for certain it was not one of those - it was a wolf".
"I am not ashamed to say when I walked home I stepped backwards every pace till I got there. The wolf was big, bigger than an Alsatian and was between knee and hip height and as I say, well built. Yes it was dark and I wish I could have seen the Wolf clearer. The colouring of it had flecks of brown and black. Its ears were black and the face was grey.”
In August 2020 a local man walking with his daughter through the Forest also encountered a Wolf Like Animal. He said: "We were walking close to Symonds Yat and we were astounded to see a Wolf standing right in the middle of the pathway. We cycled closer, it wasn’t afraid of us and calmly trotted into the woods when we were no more than 3 or 4 metres away"
